Gas stations are the most common source of confusion regarding authorization holds. Because a gas pump doesn't know how much fuel you will take when you swipe your card, it places a temporary hold on your account to verify sufficient funds. Historically, this was $1, but due to rising fuel prices and fraud, many stations now place holds of $100 to $175. This massive pending charge can temporarily tie up your available balance, even if you only pumped $30 worth of gas. The hold usually clears within 2-3 business days.

Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft utilize dynamic pricing, meaning the estimated fare you see when booking might change if the route is altered or if there is heavy traffic. Furthermore, if you tip your driver through the app after the ride, the initial charge might be adjusted, or the tip might post as a completely separate, smaller transaction, leading users to believe they were double-charged.

Municipal parking meters and private garages have increasingly outsourced their payment systems to mobile apps like ParkMobile, PayByPhone, or SpotHero. A charge for street parking will therefore appear as the app's name rather than the city municipality. Some of these apps also default to 'wallet' systems, where they charge your card a flat $25 to load a digital wallet, rather than charging you the exact $3.50 parking fee.

Toll roads and public transit systems (like E-ZPass, SunPass, or regional metro cards) often employ automated replenishment. When your toll balance dips below a certain threshold, the system automatically bills your saved credit card for a predetermined amount (e.g., $40) to top up the account.
