Once you place the nozzle back on the pump, the terminal submits your actual purchase amount to your bank. While the real charge replaces the hold, your financial institution controls how long the hold takes to drop off—sometimes up to 72 hours.
What to do if the hold hasn't disappeared
Holds are particularly problematic for debit card users, as they freeze the cash directly in your checking account. If the pending hold has not fallen off after several business days, follow these steps:
- Do not dispute it immediately If it still says 'Pending' on your online banking, a dispute will fail. You must wait for it to post or expire.
