Spotting subscriptions on your statement

  • Recurring lines repeat monthly or yearly at a fixed amount — scan backwards for identical amounts.
  • Processor tokens give them away: APPLE.COM/BILL, GOOGLE *, HLU*, SXM*.
  • Yearly renewals are the forgotten ones — antivirus, domain names, memberships bought once.
  • Find a line you don't want? See the unknown-charge playbook for the cancel-without-calling walkthrough.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find hidden subscriptions on my bank statement?

Look for recurring charges that appear on the exact same day every month or year. Common culprits are app stores (like APPLE.COM/BILL or GOOGLE *Services), streaming services, and software auto-renewals. Our tracker helps you log these so you can see your true monthly burn rate without missing the silent ones.

What is a zombie subscription?

A zombie subscription is a recurring charge you forgot about or thought you canceled, but it continues to bill you automatically. This often happens when you delete an app from your phone without officially canceling the subscription through Apple or Google, or when a free trial quietly converts to a paid plan.

How can I cancel a subscription if I don't know the login?

If you can't access the account, try contacting the merchant's support with the exact amount, date, and the last 4 digits of the card billed. If they refuse to help, you can contact your bank and request a 'stop payment' order on that specific merchant.

Why did a free trial automatically charge my credit card?

Almost all free trials require payment info upfront and include a 'negative option billing' clause in the fine print. This means that unless you explicitly cancel before the trial window expires, you automatically agree to be billed for the full subscription.

Can my bank block a specific recurring subscription?

Yes. Most banks allow you to place a 'stop payment' order against a specific merchant to prevent future recurring charges. This usually involves a small fee (around $30) and does not cancel your contract with the merchant.

What are the most common forgotten subscriptions?

The most common forgotten recurring charges are gym memberships, premium app subscriptions (billed through Apple/Google), secondary streaming services, credit monitoring tools, and yearly software renewals like antivirus or domain registrations.

How do I stop Apple or Google from billing me every month?

You cannot stop these charges by simply deleting the app. You must go into your phone's Settings. For iPhone, tap your Apple ID -> Subscriptions. For Android, open Google Play -> Profile -> Payments & subscriptions. Cancel the active subscriptions there.

Does canceling a credit card stop all subscriptions?

Not always. Visa and Mastercard offer 'Account Updater' services that automatically provide your new card number to merchants with whom you have active recurring subscriptions, ensuring continuous service (and continuous billing).

This tool is a ledger, not a biller — it can't cancel anything for you. Nothing here is financial advice.
