Tool — receipt decoder

Decode a receipt

no upload

Your receipt says Chipotle — your statement will say DD *DOORDASH. Your Amazon email says Amazon — your statement says AMZN MKTP US*R57TQ0XY1. Paste any digital receipt below and find out exactly what the charge will look like on your bank statement — before you ever see it.

Common receipts and the statement lines they become

These are the most-asked pairs. Each one links to the full explanation of what the charge is, why it looks like that, and how to verify it.

Why the receipt and the statement disagree

A receipt is marketing; a statement line is plumbing. The receipt shows the brand you recognize (Chipotle, Amazon, Steam). The statement shows the descriptor registered with the payment network — the legal billing entity, a parent company, or a processor prefix like SQ * or PAYPAL *. Banks then truncate or reformat it to fit their own layout. Same purchase, two completely different-looking names. The descriptor explainer walks through the full anatomy of a statement line.

Delivery platforms flip the problem: the receipt names the restaurant (which you recognize), but the statement names the platform (DD *DOORDASH, UBER *EATS). That’s why a restaurant you’ve never heard of can still be a charge you made.

When the statement line won’t match the receipt exactly

  • Tips. Uber, DoorDash, and restaurants can post the tip as a second line a day or two after the receipt.
  • Holds. Gas stations, hotels, and ride apps pre-authorize an amount that later settles to the receipt total.
  • PayPal funding. If your PayPal balance funded the payment, the bank statement shows a transfer from your bank — PAYPAL INST XFER — not the merchant.
  • Processor billing. Small businesses, creators, and app stores bill under their processor’s name (SQ *, PADDLE.NET*), so the receipt merchant never appears on the statement at all.

Receipt, statement, or neither?

A descriptor prediction is a hint, not a verified audit — the same merchant can bill under several names, and your bank controls the final formatting. Confirm the amount and date against your receipt before disputing anything. Not financial advice.
