Console stores, in-game currency, and platform subscriptions — charges that show the platform, not the game.
About Gaming charges
The video game industry has shifted away from one-time retail purchases toward ongoing digital microtransactions, battle passes, and subscription services. This transition has made gaming one of the most frequent sources of unexpected credit card charges, particularly for parents whose cards are attached to their children's consoles.
When a purchase is made on a gaming console, the charge reflects the platform ecosystem, not the specific game. A $10 charge for 'V-Bucks' in Fortnite or 'Robux' in Roblox will not appear as the game's name if bought on a PlayStation; it will simply say 'PLAYSTATION NETWORK'. Similarly, purchases on Xbox show as 'MICROSOFT*XBOX', and Nintendo purchases appear as 'NINTENDO'.
Microtransactions are heavily optimized to reduce friction. Once a credit card is saved to a console account, purchasing in-game currency often requires only a single button press. If parental controls and purchase passwords are not strictly configured, children can easily rack up hundreds of dollars in microtransactions without realizing they are spending real money.
Subscription fatigue is also prevalent in gaming. Services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and EA Play are required for online multiplayer and offer libraries of free games. These auto-renew monthly or annually. If a user stops playing a console and puts it in the closet, the subscription will continue to bill their card indefinitely until manually cancelled online.
PC gaming relies heavily on storefronts like Steam (Valve Corp) and Epic Games. A charge from 'STEAMGAMES.COM' indicates a purchase from the Steam platform. Both Microsoft and Sony offer strict 'no refund' policies on digital goods once they have been downloaded or played, though exceptions are occasionally made for provable unauthorized child purchases.
Frequently Asked Questions
My kid bought hundreds of dollars of in-game currency. Can I get a refund?
It depends on the platform. Microsoft, Sony, and Apple occasionally grant one-time courtesy refunds for unauthorized child purchases if you contact them immediately, but they are not legally obligated to do so.
Why does my statement just say PLAYSTATION or MICROSOFT?
Console manufacturers process all transactions through their own storefronts. Whether you bought a full $70 game or $5 of cosmetic items, the charge comes from the platform holding your credit card.
How do I stop my kid from making unauthorized gaming purchases?
You must enable parental controls on the specific device. Set up a PIN or password that is required for every single purchase, and never save your credit card information directly to a child's profile.
