When you order through major delivery apps like DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, or Postmates, the transaction is processed by the app, not the restaurant. Therefore, a $45 sushi order will appear as 'DOORDASH*SUSHI' or 'UBER EATS', obscuring the local restaurant's name. This is further complicated by 'ghost kitchens'—facilities that cook food for multiple delivery-only brands out of a single industrial space. A charge for 'MrBeast Burger' might actually originate from the kitchen of a local chain restaurant.

In physical restaurants, the adoption of modern Point-of-Sale (POS) systems has changed billing descriptors. Companies like Toast, Clover, and TouchBistro provide the hardware and payment processing for independent cafes and eateries. If a restaurant hasn't configured their POS system correctly, the charge might appear as 'TST* [Generic Name]' instead of the restaurant's actual DBA (Doing Business As) name.

Meal kit subscriptions (like HelloFresh, Blue Apron, or Factor) are another major source of food-related billing confusion. These services operate on a strict auto-delivery schedule. If a consumer forgets to skip a week or cancel their trial, they will be billed automatically, and the box of perishables will arrive at their doorstep regardless.

Finally, many restaurants place temporary 'authorization holds' on cards, especially for large parties or bar tabs. If a bartender swipes your card to open a tab, a pending charge (often for a nominal amount like $1, or a pre-set $25) will appear. This hold will eventually drop off and be replaced by the final posted amount, including the tip.
