Bank Statement Rail & Terminology Glossary
Cryptic acronyms on your bank statement like POS DEBIT, ACH PPD, or CHECKCARD are not store names — they are technical payment rails, authorization methods, or banking adjustments.
Select any code below to understand why it appears, what it means, and how to identify the real merchant behind it.
ACH Standard Entry Class (SEC) Codes
Standardized three-letter Nacha codes that identify the authorization method and transaction type for electronic ACH direct debits and credits.
ACH Payment Acknowledgment
Unreviewed registry note: ACK stands for ACH Payment Acknowledgment, the Nacha Standard Entry Class code that identifies a non-monetary entry a receiving bank sends to confirm it accepted a corporate credit payment in the CCD format. No funds move with this code — it is a receipt notice between financial institutions, not a charge a consumer can receive.Corporate Cross-Border Payment
Unreviewed registry note: CBR stands for Corporate Cross-Border Payment, the former Nacha Standard Entry Class code for corporate cross-border ACH credit and debit entries, replaced by IAT (International ACH Transaction) in 2009. The Federal Reserve states that IAT was introduced as a new SEC code that replaced the cross-border codes in use at the time.Corporate Credit or Debit
CCD is a commercial ACH class for credits or debits to corporate accounts, including vendor payments and cash concentration. The code alone does not establish a legal dispute deadline or explain an unexpected personal-account entry.Customer Initiated Entries
CIE is an ACH credit class for consumer bill payments through a payment service provider. It describes the payment route; it does not prove that you personally initiated or authorized an entry.International ACH Transaction
Unreviewed registry note: IAT designates cross-border ACH payments that involve a financial institution outside the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.Pre-arranged Payment or Deposit
PPD is an ACH Standard Entry Class code for a single or recurring credit or debit involving a consumer account. It describes the entry class, not the company or whether a particular payment was authorized.Re-Presented Check Entry
Unreviewed registry note: RCK is used by merchants and collection agencies to re-present a paper check electronically via ACH after it was initially returned for non-sufficient funds.Telephone Initiated Entries
TEL is an ACH consumer-debit class associated with telephone authorization or initiation under an eligible standing authorization. It does not identify a telephone company or prove that the account holder consented to a particular debit.Internet-Initiated/Mobile Entries
WEB is an ACH class covering certain consumer debits and person-to-person credits. For debits it relates to online/mobile authorization or eligible initiation; a WEB label alone does not prove consent, identify the company or mean money left your account.Electronic Check Conversion
Nacha settlement formats used when physical paper checks are converted into electronic debits at retail checkouts, lockboxes, or back offices.
Accounts Receivable Conversion
Unreviewed registry note: ARC occurs when a physical paper check you mailed in to pay a bill is converted into an electronic ACH debit upon arrival at the biller's lockbox.Back Office Conversion
Unreviewed registry note: BOC indicates that a paper check written in-person at a retail store checkout was scanned and converted into an ACH debit in the merchant's back office.Point-of-Purchase Entry
Unreviewed registry note: POP indicates that a paper check was scanned by a cashier at checkout to capture routing numbers, then voided and immediately returned to you.Card Network & Electronic Payment Rails
Point of sale descriptors, debit card routing formats, and pre-authorization hold classifications used by card networks and issuing banks.
Automated Teller Machine Transaction
Unreviewed registry note: ATM denotes a physical automated teller machine transaction, such as cash withdrawal, deposit, balance inquiry, or funds transfer.Authorization Hold / Pre-Authorization
An authorization hold reserves available funds or credit while a card payment is pending. AUTH HOLD alone does not identify the merchant, establish your consent or determine when this particular entry will be released.Visa / Mastercard Branded Debit Card Purchase
Unreviewed registry note: CHECKCARD is a legacy banking term for debit card purchases that run across major card networks (Visa or Mastercard) directly linked to your checking balance.Personal Identification Number Debit Rail
Unreviewed registry note: PIN DEBIT represents a real-time debit card purchase authenticated via your secret PIN and routed across regional EFT networks like Star, Pulse, or NYCE.Point of Sale Debit Transaction
Unreviewed registry note: POS DEBIT indicates a payment made directly using your debit card or mobile wallet at a retail card reader or online checkout gateway.Payment Reversal / Credit Adjustment
Unreviewed registry note: REVERSAL denotes a cancellation or refund of a previous transaction, crediting funds back to your account due to merchant return or banking correction.High-Value & Instant Clearing Rails
Core U.S. interbank clearing networks, including batch ACH, Federal Reserve Fedwire, and The Clearing House Real-Time Payments (RTP).
Automated Clearing House Network
Unreviewed registry note: ACH is the primary nationwide electronic funds transfer network in the U.S., connecting banks to process batch credits and direct debits.Real-Time Payments Network
Unreviewed registry note: RTP is an instant, 24/7/365 payment rail operated by The Clearing House that settles transfers between participating U.S. bank accounts in seconds.Wire transfer
WIRE is a wire-transfer label. The label alone does not identify the transfer network, beneficiary or your authorization. Confirm the underlying bank record before applying Fedwire settlement rules or a particular consumer-protection process.Banking Fees & Account Adjustments
Bank-assessed fees, overdraft charges, chargeback reversals, and technical settlement adjustments.
Demand Deposit Account
Unreviewed registry note: DDA refers to a standard checking or demand deposit account from which deposited funds can be withdrawn at any time without advance notice.Electronic Data Interchange Payments
Unreviewed registry note: EDI PYMNTS indicates an electronic B2B payment accompanied by structured invoice, purchase order, or remittance data.Foreign Transaction Assessment / International Service Fee
Unreviewed registry note: A 1% to 3% fee assessed by card issuers on purchases routed through foreign banks or processed in non-U.S. dollar currencies.Non-Sufficient Funds Fee
Unreviewed registry note: NSF indicates a penalty fee charged when a check or preauthorized electronic payment is presented for payment but returned unpaid due to a lack of available funds.Overdraft Service Fee / Overdraft Protection
Unreviewed registry note: An overdraft fee is assessed when your bank elects to pay a transaction that exceeds your balance, advancing funds on your behalf into a negative balance.Provisional Dispute Credit / Temporary Investigation Credit
Unreviewed registry note: A temporary credit issued to your account balance by your bank while it investigates an error or unauthorized transaction under federal law.Wire Transfer Fee (Outgoing)
Unreviewed registry note: A wire transfer fee is the charge a bank applies for sending money by wire from a deposit account. Outgoing international wires, banker-assisted transfers, and foreign-currency wires cost the most; online domestic wires cost less, and many banks waive the fee on premium accounts. Statements show it as WIRE FEE, WIRE TRANSFER FEE, or FEE FOR DOMESTIC FUNDS TRANSFER.Looking to decode a full statement line?
