IAT is not an international roaming fee, foreign exchange surcharge, or bank penalty. It is an indicator that the initiating or receiving party's bank is located overseas.
Comprendre IAT
IAT (International ACH Transaction) was established by Nacha in cooperation with the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to identify inbound and outbound international funds transfers.
Whenever money enters or leaves the U.S. ACH network involving a foreign bank, the transaction must carry the IAT SEC code along with specialized remittance and originator identification fields.
Financial institutions are legally required to perform enhanced OFAC sanctions screening and AML compliance verification on all IAT entries prior to posting.
