When you swipe or tap a card at a Speedway pump, the point-of-sale system has no way of knowing if you will buy $10 or $100 worth of gas. To protect themselves, Speedway requests a pre-authorization hold from your bank (typically between $125 and $175) to verify the card.
Once you complete your transaction, Speedway finalizes the payment for the exact amount you pumped. However, it takes time for your bank to process the finalized transaction and release the initial hold.
Why gas station holds matter
If you use a debit card, this authorization freezes the cash in your checking account. This can lead to unexpected overdrafts or declined purchases until the hold is released.
