Why did Pilot hold $175 on my card?

When you swipe your card at a Pilot or Flying J pump, the terminal authorizes a temporary hold (often $175 or more for commercial vehicles) to verify the card can cover a large fuel purchase.

Pilot does not keep this held amount. The hold is immediately replaced by the true cost of your fuel on the merchant's end, but it can take your bank several days (sometimes up to a week) to update your available balance.

Qué hacer paso a paso

This hold can be inconvenient if you use a debit card, as it temporarily restricts your access to the held cash.

  1. Wait for the charge to settle It is normal for holds to stay pending for 1-5 business days. Once the charge posts, the amount will be corrected.
  2. Follow up with your bank If the hold doesn't disappear after a week, contact your bank. Pilot cannot force your bank to release the funds faster.
  3. Prevent holds by paying inside To avoid large authorizations in the future, go inside the Pilot travel center and prepay for your fuel with the cashier.
