Resumen del cargo
COSTCO WHSE is a Costco warehouse or Costco.com purchase — the store number follows on the receipt line. The version that surprises people is the once-a-year one: COSTCO ANNUAL RENEWAL, billed on the first day of your renewal month at the rate you locked in, automatically, to the card on file.
Reading the COSTCO WHSE line
Costco signs every card payment with a short descriptor that starts COSTCO WHSE followed by the warehouse number. If the number is your local warehouse, it's an in-store trip; if it says COSTCO.COM or COSTCO GAS, it's an online order or a fuel purchase. All of them are Costco — there's no third-party processor to worry about.
The confusing one is the annual renewal: COSTCO ANNUAL RENEWAL (sometimes COSTCO COM ANNUAL RENEWAL). It's charged on the first day of your renewal month — for most members that's the month after your join date — and the price is the membership rate you signed up for, not the current walk-in rate.
- Match the amount Match the amount: in-store receipts show the same total; Costco.com orders are under Account > Orders.
- Check for $65 or $130 near your anniversary If the amount is exactly $65 or $130 and the date is near your membership anniversary, it's your annual renewal.
- Know the card on file Renewal hits the card you have on file automatically — no action needed unless you want to change cards.
- Renewal support Renewal support: 1-800-774-2678, or manage it online at Costco.com/RenewMembershipView.
Why did Costco charge me without me buying anything?
It's almost certainly your membership renewal — Costco auto-renews on the first day of your renewal month and bills the card on file. Your renewal date is visible in Account > Membership, and the charge amount tells you which tier you're on.
What's the difference between COSTCO WHSE and COSTCO.COM?
COSTCO WHSE means a warehouse or gas purchase; COSTCO.COM (or COSTCO.COM 1-800-955-2292) is an online order. Both are billed by Costco directly.
Auto renewal and how to stop it
Costco's Auto Renewal Program charges your Visa credit or debit card (or Mastercard debit) on the first day of your renewal month — Costco's own support documentation is explicit about this timing, and about the fact that renewal happens automatically unless you turn it off.
You can manage or cancel Auto Renewal online at Costco.com/RenewMembershipView, or by phone at 1-800-774-2678. If you cancel auto-renewal, membership still runs to the end of your paid year; you just renew manually after that.
- Costco auto-renews on the first day of your renewal month — the timing is in Costco's own support docs.
- The charge hits the card on file at the rate you signed up for, not the current walk-in rate.
- Auto Renewal can be managed or cancelled online at Costco.com/RenewMembershipView.
- Open Account > Membership & Renewal Sign in and open Account > Membership & Renewal.
- Turn off Auto Renewal if you want Turn off Auto Renewal if you don't want the automatic charge (your membership stays active until the current year ends).
- Update the card on file Change the card on file there too, so renewals always hit the right card.
- Duplicate renewal? If you were double-billed for a renewal you already paid, Costco refunds duplicate renewals — call 1-800-774-2678.
Can I get a refund on an auto-renewal I forgot to cancel?
Costco refunds annual memberships in full if you cancel within 30 days of renewal — including auto-renewals. After 30 days, the membership value stands.
Gas, online, and the $1.50 hold
COSTCO GAS is the pay-at-pump descriptor. Like most fuel stations, Costco places a temporary authorization — commonly $1 to $150 depending on pump settings — that drops off in 1–3 days; only the final fuel amount posts.
Costco.com orders bill as COSTCO.COM or COSTCO.COM 1-800-955-2292, and same-day delivery through Instacart bills as INSTACART (with Costco in the details), not COSTCO.
Why does my bank show a $150 hold after the gas station?
That's a temporary pre-authorization, not a charge. Costco sets pump authorizations based on the payment network's rules; the hold releases in 1–3 business days.
