What is a Wire Transfer Fee?

A 'Wire Transfer Fee' on your bank statement is a service charge levied by your bank for electronically moving funds to or from your account.

Banks charge these fees to cover the manual administrative costs and network fees (like SWIFT or Fedwire) required to process secure, irreversible transfers.

Incoming, Outgoing, and Hidden Costs

You are charged a flat fee for sending (outgoing) wires, and many banks also charge a smaller fee just to receive (incoming) wires.

For international wires, intermediary 'correspondent' banks may take a cut of the funds in transit. In addition, your bank will likely apply a hidden markup on the foreign exchange (FX) rate, which costs you much more than the flat wire fee.

  1. Step 1 Review your recent banking activity. If you did not authorize a wire transfer, contact your bank's fraud department immediately, as wire transfers are extremely difficult to reverse.
  2. Step 2 To avoid future fees, use ACH transfers for domestic payments, or fintech services like Wise for international transfers, which bypass the expensive SWIFT network.

Can I ask my bank to waive the wire fee?

Yes. If you have a premium checking account or maintain a high balance, banks will often waive wire transfer fees if you call customer service and ask politely.

Dispute Rights & Fraud Prevention

If you suspect this charge is fraudulent or billing in error, you have strict federal rights protecting your account.

Always review your statement carefully and take action within 60 days.

What should I do if I don't recognize this charge?

First, check with family members or anyone authorized on your account. If the charge remains unrecognized, contact your bank immediately to report it. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA), you have 60 days from the statement date to dispute unauthorized credit card charges.

How long does it take for a disputed charge to be removed?

Once you file a dispute, your bank must acknowledge it within 30 days and resolve it within two billing cycles (not exceeding 90 days). During this time, the disputed amount is usually placed on a provisional hold, meaning you do not have to pay it.
