Why is Wawa holding $125 of my money?

When you swipe your debit or credit card at a Wawa pump, the system doesn't know how much gas you're going to buy. To ensure your account has enough funds to cover a full tank, Wawa places a temporary authorization hold—typically between $50 and $125—on your card.

Once you finish pumping, Wawa sends the actual total to your bank. However, the bank controls when the initial hold is released. This means the hold might sit on your account for several days, temporarily reducing your available balance.

How to avoid gas pump holds

If you're using a debit card with a low balance, a $125 hold can trigger overdraft fees or cause other purchases to decline. Here is how to prevent it.

  1. Pay inside at the register When you prepay a specific dollar amount inside the store, Wawa only authorizes that exact amount, preventing large holds.
  2. Use a credit card instead Holds on credit cards reduce your available credit limit rather than freezing the liquid cash in your checking account.
  3. Wait 3-5 business days If the hold is already there, you must wait for your bank to clear it. Wawa cannot manually remove a pending authorization.
