What is MDLIVE?

MDLIVE is a major national telehealth provider that partners with numerous health insurance companies, employers, and hospital systems to provide virtual care. Through their platform, patients can connect with board-certified doctors, dermatologists, psychiatrists, and therapists via secure video or phone consultations.

Why did MDLIVE bill your card?

Before you join an MDLIVE virtual waiting room, you are required to input a payment method. If your health insurance does not fully cover the cost of the virtual visit, MDLIVE will charge your card for the remaining balance. This could be a standard copay, a coinsurance percentage, or the full self-pay rate if your insurance was rejected or if you have a high-deductible health plan that you haven't yet met.

It is also common to see temporary authorization holds from MDLIVE. Before the visit begins, they may place a hold on your card to ensure funds are available. Once your health insurance finalizes the claim and determines your exact patient responsibility, the final charge is processed, and any excess hold amount is released.

Resolving billing discrepancies

If you were charged more than your expected copay, it is usually because of a discrepancy with your insurance file. Sometimes, an insurance provider will deny a telehealth claim due to incorrect coding or a lapse in coverage. In these cases, MDLIVE automatically reverts to charging the patient the full cash price of the visit.

1. Review your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your health insurance provider to see how they processed the MDLIVE claim.
2. Log in to your MDLIVE portal to view your invoices.
3. If the insurance processing was an error, call MDLIVE customer service at 1-800-400-6354 to request a billing review.
