Plain-English Definition
PPD stands for Prearranged Payment and Deposit. PPD is the standard Nacha code used for consumer electronic transfers, including payroll direct deposits and authorized recurring bill payments.
Important: What this code is NOT
PPD is not a company name or retailer. It is a technical classification code assigned by Nacha to describe consumer bank transfers. The actual merchant, employer, or utility initiating the transaction is printed adjacent to 'PPD' on your statement line.
Understanding PPD (Prearranged Payment and Deposit)
PPD (Prearranged Payment and Deposit) indicates an Automated Clearing House (ACH) electronic transfer between a business and a consumer checking or savings account.
When appearing as a credit (positive amount), it is typically your salary, payroll direct deposit, government benefit, or pension distribution.
When appearing as a debit (negative amount), it represents an authorized recurring or single payment for bills such as utility services, auto loans, insurance premiums, or gym memberships that you previously authorized by providing your bank account and routing number.
How to Locate the Actual Merchant
Because PPD specifies the underlying payment rail or transaction type, you must examine the accompanying text on your statement to identify where you actually shopped or paid:
- Step 1 Look immediately to the right or left of the letters 'PPD' on your statement row for the company identifier (e.g., 'STATE FARM PPD' or 'DUKE ENERGY PPD').
- Step 2 Check your scheduled autopay accounts to confirm if a recurring bill matches the exact dollar amount and date.
- Step 3 If the descriptor is truncated or obscured, contact your bank's customer service and ask for the 10-digit ACH Company ID or Originator Name linked to the PPD entry.
Common Statement Line Formats
Financial institutions typically format PPD entries like this:
PAYROLL ACME CORP PPD DIR DEPSTATE FARM INS PPD 800-922-0204DUKE ENERGY PPD ELEC BILLTOYOTA FIN SERV PPD LEASE
