What is Amwell?

Amwell is a leading national telehealth provider that facilitates on-demand, 24/7 video visits with board-certified doctors, therapists, and dietitians. Many health insurance companies and major employers partner with Amwell to power their own branded telehealth offerings.

Why was your card charged?

Before you are placed in a virtual waiting room to speak with a physician, Amwell requires a credit card on file. If you are paying entirely out-of-pocket, you will be charged the standard self-pay rate for the visit type (urgent care visits have one flat rate, while therapy and psychiatry visits have different rates).

If you entered your health insurance information, Amwell will attempt to verify your benefits. If your insurance plan assigns a specific copay for telehealth visits, that amount is charged to your card. However, because insurance claims can sometimes take weeks to process fully, Amwell may place an initial authorization hold on your card and finalize the actual charge only after your insurance company issues an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) detailing exactly what you owe.

Investigating unexpected billing

Unexpectedly high charges from Amwell often occur when an insurance provider denies a claim, citing that telehealth is not a covered benefit or that a deductible has not been met. In these scenarios, Amwell holds the patient responsible for the remaining balance.

1. Check your insurance portal for a recent Explanation of Benefits (EOB) related to Amwell or American Well.
2. Compare the patient responsibility amount on the EOB to the charge on your bank statement.
3. If you believe the charge is a duplicate or an error, contact Amwell support at 1-877-410-5548.
